EYBENS: Waste management company Scapigliato has signed an agreement with Waga Energy to produce renewable natural gas (RNG) at its landfill site in Rosignano Marittimo, Tuscany.
The deal, finalized on April 29, follows a competitive tender launched by Scapigliato in July 2024. Under the agreement, Waga Energy will finance, build, and operate a purification unit using its patented WAGABOX® technology to convert landfill biogas into RNG. The unit is expected to begin operations in 2027 and run for an initial period of 10 years.
The facility will have a production capacity of 92 GWh of RNG annually, enough to power approximately 9,400 Italian households. Its operation is expected to cut around 15,500 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year by reducing reliance on fossil natural gas.
The RNG produced will be injected into the local gas grid and sold under a Biomethane Purchase Agreement, with revenues shared between Waga Energy and Scapigliato.
Scapigliato Chairman Marco Colatarci and Managing Director Alessandro Franchi welcomed the partnership, highlighting its environmental and economic benefits. “This agreement confirms the growth of RNG production from landfills, and we trust in a swift implementation of the project,” they said.
Andrea Baldini, CEO of Waga Energy Italia, expressed pride in the collaboration, emphasizing its role in advancing sustainable waste management practices and energy transition in Italy.
Waga Energy operates 30 RNG production units worldwide and is expanding its footprint in Italy through projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
