BOCA RATON: ModMed, a software provider for specialty medical practices backed by Clearlake Capital Group, announced Monday it has acquired Bonsai Health, a high-growth AI platform for patient engagement.

The deal integrates Bonsai’s agentic AI tools — which automate patient reactivation and self-scheduling via SMS and email — into ModMed’s “AI-Powered Practice” suite. Bonsai identifies care gaps and schedule openings without staff intervention, complementing ModMed’s existing Klara platform for communication workflows.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the incredible team at Bonsai Health into the ModMed family,” ModMed co-founder and co-CEO Dan Cane said in a statement. “Their agentic AI platform and approach to patient reactivation are a perfect fit for our vision.”

ModMed plans to scale Bonsai to its network of nearly 50,000 providers in specialties including dermatology, ophthalmology and orthopedics. Bonsai’s founders, Travis Schneider and Luke Kervin — veterans of patient engagement firm PatientPop — will bring their expertise to the combined company.

“Joining the ModMed family provides us with the scale and resources … to advance our agentic AI innovation faster than ever before,” Bonsai co-founder and co-CEO Luke Kervin said.

Clearlake Managing Director Paul Huber called the acquisition a step toward “proactive, automated patient engagement at scale.”

ModMed offers electronic health records, practice management and analytics for specialty medicine. Clearlake, with over $185 billion in assets under management, supports the company.
