In a major move aimed at bolstering national security, GlobalFoundries, a leading semiconductor manufacturing company, and Lockheed Martin, a renowned missile manufacturer, have announced a strategic collaboration to ensure a reliable domestic supply of semiconductors for defense systems.
The partnership, unveiled on Monday, aligns with the United States government’s CHIPS and Science Act, which aims to revitalize semiconductor production within the country.
Under this collaboration, GlobalFoundries and Lockheed Martin will work together to secure manufacturing capabilities for a wide range of advanced and next-generation chips. By leveraging GlobalFoundries’ cutting-edge technology, the partnership aims to enhance the anti-fragility of microelectronic systems and supply chains, thereby strengthening the resilience of defense systems.
The joint effort not only signifies a critical step towards securing the semiconductor supply chain but also supports the CHIPS and Science Act, a legislative initiative designed to bring semiconductor manufacturing back to the United States.
The Act provides substantial government subsidies totaling around $52 billion for U.S. semiconductor production, along with an investment tax credit valued at approximately $24 billion for manufacturing plants.
Commenting on the collaboration, the spokesperson for GlobalFoundries stated, “This partnership with Lockheed Martin marks a significant milestone in our commitment to supporting national security. By joining forces, we aim to enhance the domestic semiconductor supply chain and contribute to the development of resilient defense systems.”
Lockheed Martin, known for its expertise in defense technologies, expressed enthusiasm about the joint endeavor.
“We are proud to collaborate with GlobalFoundries to address the critical semiconductor supply chain challenges faced by our nation. This strategic partnership will enable us to harness advanced semiconductor technology, ensuring the uninterrupted production of next-generation defense systems,” stated a representative from Lockheed Martin.
The partnership between GlobalFoundries and Lockheed Martin comes at a time when global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties have heightened the importance of securing essential components for defense and critical infrastructure. By strengthening domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, the collaboration intends to reduce reliance on foreign sources, enhance national security, and foster innovation in the defense sector.
As the collaboration progresses, GlobalFoundries and Lockheed Martin plan to explore avenues for technological advancements, including the development of advanced fabrication processes, chip designs, and secure supply chain solutions. With the combined expertise and resources of both companies, the partnership is poised to make significant strides in safeguarding domestic semiconductor supply for defense systems and contributing to the nation’s strategic interests.
As the CHIPS and Science Act gains momentum and the partnership between GlobalFoundries and Lockheed Martin takes shape, the United States is poised to regain its position as a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing, reinforcing its technological capabilities and ensuring the security of critical defense infrastructure.
