Google confirms Pixel Fold's existence in official teaser ahead of I/O event

After months of rumors and leaks, Google has finally confirmed the existence of its first foldable phone, the Pixel Fold. The company released a video on Twitter and YouTube that showcased the highly anticipated device in an official capacity for the first time.

Google had initially planned to unveil the Pixel Fold at its annual Google I/O conference, which is set to take place next week.

However, in a move that has become typical for the company in recent years, Google decided to offer an early sneak peek at its upcoming device before the official launch event.

As previously revealed in various leaks, the Pixel Fold boasts a vertical hinge that opens up to reveal a tablet-like display, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold devices. When closed, the Pixel Fold features a smaller touchscreen on one side of the exterior, as well as a camera array on the rear.

While the pricing and specifications for the Pixel Fold have yet to be confirmed, reports suggest that the device will start at $1,700 and could be available as soon as next month. The Pixel Fold is said to run on Google’s Tensor G2 chipset, which is the same processor found in the company’s Pixel 7 devices.

The external screen reportedly measures 5.8 inches, while the internal display measures 7.6 inches. The device is also rumored to have up to 24 hours of battery life based on regular use and up to 72 hours with the Extreme Battery Saver mode enabled.

However, it’s worth noting that while the device is “coming soon,” according to the teaser, it has yet to be cleared for sale by regulatory bodies. Although the Pixel Fold did recently pass through the FCC, authorization is still pending.

This could mean that the product launch may happen sometime after the unveiling at Google I/O on May 10th, potentially closer to a mid-summer availability timeframe.

In addition to the Pixel Fold, Google is also expected to unveil other hardware at this year’s I/O event, including the Pixel 7a and a new Pixel Tablet with an interesting form factor. If we’re lucky, there could even be a quick teaser for the upcoming Pixel 8 flagships.

For those interested in the Pixel Fold, a product page is now available on the Google Store. While it doesn’t offer any new information, the page confirms the I/O 2023 unveiling and offers a link to sign up for updates on the Pixel Fold and other products from the Google Store.

Overall, the Pixel Fold’s confirmation has generated a lot of excitement among tech enthusiasts, and many are eagerly anticipating Google’s official launch of the device.

Here’s hoping that Google has learned from Samsung’s early foldable missteps and has made sure that the Pixel Fold’s hinge is durable enough to withstand everyday use.
