Nokia has launched the Nokia G42, a new budget smartphone that offers 5G connectivity and easy at-home repairs. The G42 is the latest in Nokia’s series of repairable smartphones, which aim to extend the lifespan and reduce the environmental impact of mobile devices.
The G42, which costs £199 in the UK and AU$449 in Australia, features a 50MP camera, a 6.56-inch HD+ display with 90Hz refresh rate, a Snapdragon 480 Plus 5G processor, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It also boasts a long-lasting battery that can last up to three days on a single charge and retain 80% of its health after 800 full charging cycles.
But the main selling point of the G42 is its repairability. Nokia has partnered with global repair community iFixit to provide Fix Kits and replacement parts for the screen, the battery and the charging port, which users can easily swap out themselves. The parts start at AU$42.99 in Australia, while UK pricing is not yet available.
Nokia says its intention with the G42 is to allow owners to keep using their phone as if it were new, long after the warranty expires. The company also promises three years of monthly security updates and two years of OS updates for the G42.
The G42 is available now in the UK and will arrive in Australia in late July. There is no word on US availability. The phone comes in two colours: So Grey and So Purple.
