BrainChip and Frontgrade Gaisler to augment space-grade microprocessors with AI capabilities

BrainChip Holdings Ltd, a pioneer in neuromorphic artificial intelligence technology, has joined forces with Frontgrade Gaisler, a leader in space-grade system-on-chip solutions, to integrate BrainChip’s Akida™ neuromorphic processor into Frontgrade Gaisler’s advanced microprocessors.

This collaboration marks a significant leap forward, aiming to create the world’s first space-grade system-on-chip (SoC) with true AI capabilities.

The next-generation microprocessors will be enhanced with BrainChip’s AI processing prowess, offering a substantial upgrade in computing resources for space missions. The Akida neuromorphic processor is expected to provide exceptional power efficiency and inference performance, while remaining compatible with existing Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs).

Sandi Habinc, General Manager at Frontgrade Gaisler, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “Integrating AI into our microprocessors sets a new benchmark for space-grade computing devices and could significantly boost mission efficiency.”

The integration of AI and neuromorphic computing into space technology is seen as a solution to the challenges of latency and power consumption that currently impede space programs. This technology promises to enhance the autonomy and adaptability of space deployments, enabling on-device learning and adjustment to dynamic environmental conditions.

Ali Zadeh, Head of the Data Systems & Microelectronics Division at the European Space Agency, highlighted the importance of reliable technology for spacecraft platforms and payloads. “The incorporation of neuromorphic capabilities into a space-grade SoC opens up exciting prospects for future space applications,” Zadeh said.
