Deal strengthens critical energy connectivity to South Australia amid rising renewable integration
SYDNEY: Morgan Stanley Investment Management, through its private infrastructure platform Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners (MSIP), announced today it has agreed to acquire Epic Energy, the operator of a key Australian gas pipeline system. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2026, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
Epic Energy owns and operates the Moomba to Adelaide Pipeline System (MAPS), a 50-year-old conduit that connects northern Australian gas fields to Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, a global frontrunner in renewable energy penetration. MAPS is one of only two pipeline networks serving the region, providing essential supply to power generators, industrial users, and utility customers across the state.
“MAPS is a critical piece of energy infrastructure with a long operating history, high barriers to entry, and enduring strategic value,” said Tim Cooper, Co-Head of Asia-Pacific for MSIP. “As the sole long-haul pipeline linking Adelaide to northern gas supplies, it underpins energy reliability in South Australia while delivering stable cash flows backed by long-term customer contracts.”
Mark McLean, also Co-Head of Asia-Pacific for MSIP, emphasized the firm’s relationship-driven strategy: “This acquisition reflects our approach to securing high-quality infrastructure assets through direct engagement with local owners. By leveraging longstanding relationships, we provide our investors with differentiated opportunities while supporting essential infrastructure in key global markets.”
