Apple Inc. is preparing to expand its smart home portfolio with the anticipated launch of a refreshed HomePod mini this fall and a screen-equipped HomePod model expected in 2026, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The new lineup is expected to feature a dedicated home operating system, internally codenamed “Charismatic,” marking Apple’s first screen-centric HomeKit device. If released as projected, the devices would position Apple in direct competition with Amazon’s Alexa+ and Google’s Gemini for Home, both of which have recently undergone significant upgrades.
The HomePod with a screen was initially slated for release in Q1 2025, but analysts began forecasting delays late last year. Revised expectations now point to a Q3 2025 slip, with limited technical details available.
According to reports, the delay coincides with ongoing challenges in Apple’s voice assistant strategy, as reports suggest Siri remains underpowered compared to rivals. Apple is reportedly in discussions with Google to integrate Gemini into Siri’s framework.
Despite lagging behind Amazon and Google in smart home adoption, Apple’s design-first approach and ecosystem integration may appeal to loyal users seeking a cohesive home automation experience.
Analysts believe the screen-enabled HomePod could serve as a central hub for Apple’s smart home ambitions, offering visual controls, media playback, and enhanced HomeKit functionality.
The HomePod mini refresh is expected to include upgraded internals, improved wireless connectivity, and expanded color options. Apple has not commented on the timeline or specifications.
