LONDON: ITM Power and Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) have entered into an agreement to collaborate on sustainable transportation and infrastructure, focusing on green energies such as hydrogen and its derivatives.
DB, one of Europe’s largest transportation companies and railway operators, aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2040. As part of its decarbonization strategy, DB plans to transition its fleet of trains, buses, and trucks to low- and zero-emission vehicles. The initiative includes the development of infrastructure to support the operation and maintenance of these fleets with green energy and fuels.
The partnership between ITM Power and DB will center on five key areas:
- Decarbonization technologies: Enhancing mutual understanding of technologies that reduce carbon emissions in rail and mobility sectors.
- Transport and mobility solutions: Sharing knowledge on green hydrogen applications and exploring partnerships for green energy and mobility services, including refueling infrastructure.
- Zero-emissions operations: Developing pathways for emissions-free operations through green hydrogen sourcing and storage.
- Energy resilience: Exploring energy self-sufficiency and resilience, with pilot projects in the rail and infrastructure industries.
- Green energy logistics: Understanding and piloting hydrogen transport and supply chains in Germany, Europe, and beyond.
Dennis Schulz, CEO of ITM Power, praised DB’s ambitions: “Deutsche Bahn has an ambitious strategy to transition towards a clean and climate-friendly rail system in Germany and to play a major role in the transportation of green fuels. We are delighted to support Deutsche Bahn in advancing sustainable transport solutions in the heart of the EU.”
Niko Warbanoff, CEO of DB E.C.O. Group, added: “As part of DB, the DB E.C.O. Group is very interested in developing new ideas and collaborations in areas such as green energy, decarbonization, and zero emissions, thereby making a contribution to the rail and infrastructure sector in Germany and around the world.”
The collaboration underscores the commitment of both organizations to advancing sustainable transport and reducing carbon footprints in Europe.
