SYDNEY: BHP Group Limited (BHP) announced today that Chair Ken MacKenzie will retire from the Board on March 31, 2025. Ross McEwan, a seasoned executive with over 30 years of global experience, has been elected to succeed him as Chair, effective the same day.

Ken MacKenzie joined the BHP Board in September 2016 and has served as Chair since September 2017. Throughout his tenure, MacKenzie led BHP’s strategic shift towards future-facing commodities, emphasizing safety, disciplined capital management, and social value creation.

“It has been a privilege to serve as the Chair of BHP for the last eight years and as a Director for nine years,” MacKenzie said. “BHP is now a simpler, more productive, and resilient company, thanks to a talented and committed team focused on creating sustainable long-term value for our shareholders, supply chain partners, and communities.”

The appointment of Ross McEwan follows a formal Chair succession process led by BHP Senior Independent Director Gary Goldberg. McEwan has been an independent Non-executive Director of BHP since April 4, 2024, and brings extensive experience in capital allocation, risk management, and value creation. McEwan previously served as CEO of National Australia Bank and Group CEO of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

“It is an honor and privilege to succeed Ken MacKenzie as Chair of BHP,” McEwan said. “Under his leadership, BHP has become simpler, more agile, and well-positioned for the future. I am committed to generating long-term value for all our shareholders and look forward to working with the Board and management to continue advancing this great company.”

McEwan is currently the Lead Independent Director of Reece Limited and a Non-executive Director on the Board of QinetiQ Group Plc.
