Apple is reportedly working on a new version of its HomePod smart speaker that will feature a smart display on the top of the device. The new HomePod, which is expected to launch in 2024, has been leaked in an image posted by a reliable leaker on X/Twitter.
The image, which was shared by Kosutami, shows a HomePod with a large display that seems to be showing some notifications and album art. The display is much bigger than the 3.5-inch touch panel that is currently present on the HomePod.
Previous rumors suggested that the display could be around seven inches, but the leaked image suggests that it might be closer to five inches.
The purpose of the display is not clear, but it could be used to show widgets, similar to the ones on the Apple Watch and iPhone 15. The display could also be used to control smart home devices, as Apple is said to be refocusing on its smart home tech. However, the display appears to be horizontal, which could limit its visibility and usability.
The new HomePod is not likely to be the rumored HomePod/Apple TV 4K hybrid that has been speculated for a while. The screen is not big enough for that. Instead, the new HomePod could be a more advanced version of the current HomePod, with more AI smarts and better sound quality.
Apple has not officially confirmed or denied the existence of the new HomePod, but it could be announced in early 2024, along with other new products from the company. The new HomePod could compete with other smart speakers with displays, such as the Amazon Echo Show and the Google Nest Hub.
However, Apple still has some work to do to improve its smart home ecosystem. Siri remains slow and inaccurate at times, and the HomePods often suffer from bugs, glitches, and connectivity issues. Apple fans are hoping that the new HomePod will not only have a nice display, but also a better performance and reliability.
