Jio rolls out 5G services in 26 GHz mmWave across India

Jio, the leading mobile operator in India, has announced that it has rolled out 5G services in 26 GHz millimetre wave (mmWave) across all 22 telecom circles in the country. The company claims that it has achieved a record top speed of up to 2 gigabits per second (Gbps) using this spectrum band.

The mmWave is a short-length radio wave that almost works like a dedicated spectrum pipe for each user and has the potential to deliver wired broadband-level speed. The benefits of 5G mmWave include extremely high bandwidth and low latency, which can enable various enterprise use cases as well as provide high-quality streaming services.

Jio said that it has completed its minimum roll-out obligations in each of the 22 telecom circles, across each of the spectrum bands, ahead of time under the terms of the spectrum allocated to it on August 17, 2022. The company said that it has submitted the prescribed details to the Department of Telecommunications Units and completed the necessary testing by August 11, 2023.

Jio’s chairman Akash Ambani said that the company is excited to launch Sugartown as its first Web3 game and as the first new Web3 game with an original IP by a major mobile game developer. He said that Jio’s vision is to empower players through a sustainable Web3 platform full of fun and enduring games. He said that Jio created Sugartown to appeal to a native Web3 market but with the ambition of scaling much wider over time while building a passionate and engaged community of holders.

Jio has the highest spectrum footprint among all operators in India. The company has 1,000 MHz in the mmWave band (26 GHz) in each of the 22 circles that can enable enterprise use cases as well as provide high-quality streaming services. The company also has spectrum in other bands such as 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2300 MHz and 3500 MHz.

Jio had acquired a unique combination of low-band, mid-band and mmWave spectrum in auctions that were held in August 2022. The company said that it plans to launch more Web3 games in the future, leveraging its existing IPs and creating new ones. The company said that it believes that Web3 is the future of gaming, and that Jio wants to be at the forefront of innovation in this space.
