QR codes are an underrated modern convenience. They are a great way to share information, from contact information to wifi passwords. Businesses use them to improve customer experiences. By scanning the right QR code, for example, you could get in touch with the Spectrum call center, open Whatsapp web on your browser, or even pay for a product or service. Making and scanning QR codes is easy on Android devices. But while Apple’s cameras can recognize and read QR codes, making them can be a bit more complicated. But don’t worry! By the time you’re done reading this blog, you’ll know how to make a QR code on Apple devices like your iPhone, iPad and even your Mac.
Read on to discover how.
Use Google Chrome to Make Free QR Codes
Need to share a lengthy URL with someone? A simple QR code does the trick without any typos or unnecessary copy/paste steps. Your iPhone and Mac can do that as well as any device thanks to Google Chrome. Or, to be more precise, thanks to one of Google Chrome’s many built-in features: a free QR code generator. Here’s how you do it in 5 easy steps:
- Open the Chrome browser application on your device (iPhone or Mac)
- Using the browser, visit the website with the URL you want to share
- Click/tap the Share button, and select Create a QR Code from the dropdown menu
- Tap share on your iPhone to either send it to someone or save the code for later
- Click the Download button on your Mac to download the code for sharing.
And that’s it! You can now share as many free QR codes for website URLs as you want. And all you need is Google Chrome to create them.
Use the Built-in Shortcut App to Generate QR Codes
Don’t want to use Google Chrome’s free QR-code generator? Apple doesn’t have a QR code generator of its own (which shouldn’t be a surprise). But you can use a built-in app on your iPhone, Mac, or iPad as a substitute. Can you guess what the app is? It’s the built-in Shortcuts application on your Apple device. This involves a slightly longer process than using Google Chrome’s QR generator. But if you’re sharing something other than a website URL, the Shortcuts app works best without needing third-party QR code generators. Here’s how to do it:
Find and open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac
- At the top-left, click or tap the “+” sign to add a new shortcut
- When prompted, create a new shortcut named QR code generator
- Select a unique icon for your new shortcut
- Next, head to the searchbar and type in the term “Ask”
- From the search results, choose the option titled “Ask for input” under Scripting
- In the next step, search for “QR” and look for “Generate QR Code” under Documents
- Finally, search for share and click the first search result
- You now have a shortcut to generate QR codes.
To use the code generator, use the voice command “Hey Siri, QR code generator”. Siri will then request the text you want to share in a QR code. Once done, it will instantly generate a QR code for you to share with relative ease.
Tip: Remember to save the shortcut for future use.
Use a Third-Party App to Make QR Codes on iOS
If the first two options don’t cut it for you, there’s still a third one! On your iPhone or iPad, you should be able to download and use third-party QR code generator apps. These are perfect if the data you want to share over the code is a lot more than simple text. These applications, if they exist on the Appstore, will already be vetted and ready for use within the Apple ecosystem. All you have to do is install the most suitable app with the kind of options you need, and you should be good to go. There are a ton of apps that you can use as safe QR code generators on your iPhone or your iPad. Some of the best ones include:
- QR Code Reader and QR Scanner
- QRbot
- Qrafter
- Qrscan
And there you have it. Nothing’s going to stop you from creating and sharing QR codes using your Apple devices anymore! Have fun!
