Eiffage wins contract for a new bridge on river Rhine for a total value of €180 million 1

PARIS: Eiffage, through Eiffage Métal and its subsidiaries SEH (Germany) and Iemants (Belgium), recently won, in a consortium with Hochtief and Max Bögl, the contract to build a new bridge on the Rhine in Leverkusen, Germany.

The contract amounts to €180 million in total, with Eiffage’s share worth €116 million. The new 2×3 lane bridge will be located on the A1 motorway linking Leverkusen and Trier. This project aims to double the capacity of the undersized existing structure and is part of ongoing bridge improvement plans in Germany.

Awarded by Autobahn GmbH (the company responsible for managing Germany’s motorway network), the contract covers the construction of a 1,068-metre-long structure comprising a 689-metre cable-stayed metal section and a concrete section.

The metal components, almost 16,000 tonnes of steel in total, will be manufactured in the Group’s European factories before being transported along the Rhine to the bridge site. Eiffage will be drawing on all its production capabilities to help complete this large-scale structure.

As consortium lead, SEH will be responsible for overall coordination of the project, including the works schedule and all bridge equipment, as well as design of the cable-stayed section, and assembly of its metal components and cables.

Works are to begin immediately, with handover scheduled for early 2024 at the latest. Eiffage Métal has previously built several metal structures in Germany, including the Hochmosel bridge, completed in 2020 and one of the largest steel viaducts in the country, and the Elbe and Zollelbe bridges currently under construction in Magdeburg.

Eiffage is one of Europe’s leading construction and concessions companies. The Group’s activities are organised around the following business lines: construction, real estate and urban development, civil engineering, metal, roads, energy and concessions. Thanks to the experience of more than 72,000 employees, Eiffage generated revenue of €16.3 billion in 2020, of which 26.5% was outside France.
