General Motors (GM) has announced a recall of certain Chevrolet Silverado medium-duty trucks for model year 2019 or later due to a potential brake fluid leak that could result in a fire. According to documents posted by U.S. safety regulators on Saturday, the recall affects 40,428 vehicles, including 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD models with model years between 2019 and 2023.
The vehicles may have a brake pressure sensor assembly that could allow brake fluid to leak and cause a short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire that could occur when the vehicle is either driving or parked. GM is urging owners of potentially affected models to park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures until the recall repair is done.
Vehicles with model years before 2019 used a different design and are not affected by the recall. GM has not received reports of any injuries related to the condition.
This recall is the latest in a series of recalls that GM has issued in recent years. In 2014, the company recalled 2.6 million vehicles due to a faulty ignition switch that could cause the car to stall, disabling airbags and other safety features. The company has since paid billions in settlements and fines related to that recall.
GM is now working closely with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to address this latest issue and ensure that affected vehicles are repaired as soon as possible. Owners of affected vehicles are advised to contact their local dealer or GM customer service to schedule a free repair.
