Euronext is in discussions to purchase up to 100% of the Athens Stock Exchange in a 399 million euro ($470 million) all-share deal, according to Reuters.
The move would mark the latest expansion for the pan-European exchange operator, which already runs markets in France, the Netherlands and other countries.
On Tuesday, Euronext announced plans to offer one new share for every 21 shares held by Athens Stock Exchange (ATHEX) investors, valuing ATHEX stock at 6.90 euros per share. ATHEX shares closed at 6.03 euros on Tuesday.
The Greek Finance Ministry endorsed the offer, stating it views a potential agreement “very positively.”
“A possible acquisition of the Athens Stock Exchange by Euronext constitutes a practical vote of confidence in the stability and positive course of the Greek economy,” the ministry said in a statement.
The deal aligns with Euronext’s strategy to consolidate European capital markets, as it blames market fragmentation for a competitiveness gap with U.S. exchanges. Since January, Euronext has introduced a European Common Prospectus and partnered with Deutsche Boerse to curb the trend of European companies opting for U.S. listings.
