MINNEAPOLIS: Metronet, recently acquired by a joint venture between T-Mobile and KKR, announced Wednesday it has purchased US Internet (USI), a Minnetonka-based fiber provider serving more than 140,000 homes and businesses in the greater Minneapolis area.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

USI operates a 100% fiber network offering symmetrical internet speeds up to 10 Gbps. The acquisition significantly expands Metronet’s footprint in Minnesota, where it already serves communities including Lakeville, Waconia, Shakopee, Owatonna, Faribault and Rochester.

“USI is the premier independent fiber provider in Minneapolis with a tremendous reputation, and we are so proud that it is becoming part of the Metronet family,” said David Heimbach, Metronet CEO. “Their coverage map complements Metronet’s own footprint in the greater Minneapolis area, creating a strong strategic fit as we continue to accelerate the expansion of our network.”

Founded three decades ago, USI will transition its residential customers to T-Mobile Fiber, which now leads sales, marketing and customer experience for Metronet’s residential services. USI’s commercial clients will become Metronet commercial customers.

“Being a part of the Metronet and T-Mobile Fiber families means that our customers will stay on the cutting edge of internet speeds and service,” said Travis Carter, USI co-founder and CEO.

Metronet, which operates fiber networks in more than 300 communities across 19 states, is expanding its 100% fiber network at what it claims is the fastest pace in the industry.
