ROTTERDAM: TotalEnergies (Paris:TTE) and CMA CGM Group have signed a joint venture agreement to establish an LNG bunkering logistics platform at the Port of Rotterdam, marking a strategic expansion in Europe’s maritime energy transition.
The 50-50 partnership between the French energy major and global shipping and logistics provider will deliver liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering solutions to vessels across the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region, starting in late 2028. A new 20,000 cubic-meter LNG bunker vessel will be jointly operated from Rotterdam, supported by TotalEnergies’ existing infrastructure, including the Gas Agility bunker ship.
Under a long-term supply contract, TotalEnergies will deliver up to 360,000 tons of LNG annually to CMA CGM through 2040 to fuel its expanding dual-fuel fleet, expected to reach 123 vessels by 2029.
“This strategic partnership not only strengthens our position as a major player in LNG bunkering but also illustrates the shared commitment of two leading French companies to actively support the energy transition,” said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.
Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM, called the deal “a concrete way to scale up alternative fuels and accelerate the decarbonization of global trade.”
Regulatory approval for the venture is pending. The collaboration builds on previous supply agreements and milestones in LNG bunkering between the two firms across Rotterdam, Marseille Fos, and Dunkirk.
