NEW YORK: Fox Corp. said Thursday it has acquired Caliente TV, a Mexican sports broadcasting platform, in a move aimed at strengthening its sports content and expanding its streaming footprint in Latin America.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The acquisition is part of Fox’s broader push into sports streaming, as the company prepares to roll out its direct-to-consumer platform, Fox One, later this year. Fox also operates Tubi, a free ad-supported streaming service.
As part of the announcement, Fox named Carlos Martinez as executive vice president and managing director of Latin America. Martinez, a veteran of Turner, Discovery and Fox, said the deal reflects Fox’s commitment to building “a leading sports streaming business in Mexico with massive audience reach, a robust sports rights portfolio and an impressive roster of exclusive sports leagues and talent.”
The company’s sports rights portfolio includes broadcast agreements with the Big Ten Conference, the United Football League, the Premier League and the FA Cup. With Caliente TV, Fox said it will significantly broaden its offering of original sports content in the region.
The move comes as streaming continues to eclipse traditional television formats. According to Nielsen data tracking May viewership, streaming surpassed the combined share of broadcast and cable TV for the first time, intensifying competition among platforms seeking exclusive programming and subscribers.
