HELSINKI: MariaDB plc announced Tuesday the acquisition of Finland-based Codership Oy, the developer of Galera Cluster, a high availability database solution known for ensuring uptime, preventing data loss and scaling with database growth.
As part of the deal, Codership’s core team, including its founders, will join MariaDB, expanding the company’s European engineering and technical support operations.
Galera Cluster has been closely tied to MariaDB since its launch nearly 14 years ago, including as a standard feature in MariaDB Server for more than nine years. Today, over a third of MariaDB Enterprise Platform customers use Galera Cluster. The acquisition comes as demand grows for high availability and zero-data-loss solutions in high-volume production environments.
“High availability and advanced replication methods are critical for our enterprise customers,” said Vikas Mathur, MariaDB’s chief product officer. “Bringing Galera Cluster into MariaDB formally will allow us to enhance these capabilities and deliver even better support.”
Rohit de Souza, CEO of MariaDB, called the deal “an exciting step” in the company’s growth. “We’ve rapidly innovated while building a profitable business,” he said. “This acquisition will accelerate our ability to deliver exceptional value to customers.”
Seppo Jaakola, co-founder of Codership, said joining MariaDB will expand Galera Cluster’s reach. “MariaDB users already benefit from our high availability solution, and this move will bring our technology to even more customers.”
Galera Cluster supports both MariaDB and MySQL databases, and both versions will continue to be maintained. Users are advised to contact MariaDB for upgrades from community to enterprise versions.
Since going private in September under K1 Investment Management and appointing de Souza as CEO, MariaDB has prioritized innovation, including launching open-source vector search capabilities and enhancing its Enterprise Platform. The company was recently honored with a 2025 AI TechAward for its open-source AI advancements.
