TAIPEI: ASUS has launched a massive 3,000-watt power supply unit (PSU) designed for high-performance workstations and AI systems, capable of supporting up to four next-generation RTX 5090 graphics cards.
The ASUS Pro Workstation PSU features four 12V-2×6 power ports and comes with pre-etched cables for CPU and PCIe connections. Despite its high output, the unit measures just 175 mm (6.9 inches) long, making it more compact than many lower-wattage competitors.
Certified 80 PLUS Platinum for energy efficiency, the PSU minimizes wasted power as heat. Its dual ball-bearing fan is rated for 80,000 hours of continuous use—equivalent to more than nine years of operation.
To address overheating risks seen in high-wattage GPUs, ASUS engineered the included cables to run 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) below safety limits, reducing the chance of melted connectors. The flexible cables also aid installation and prevent improper seating.
The PSU supports PCIe 5.1 and ATX 3.1 standards, ensuring future compatibility with upcoming hardware. However, its extreme power demands make it impractical for most home users. A standard 15-amp, 120-volt U.S. outlet can only supply 1,800 watts, meaning this PSU requires either a 25-30 amp 120V circuit or a 15-20 amp 240V outlet to avoid tripping breakers.
ASUS targets professionals running multi-GPU AI systems, as next-gen GPUs like the RTX 5090 demand more power than previous models. Last year, manufacturers like Seasonic introduced 2,500-watt PSUs for systems with four RTX 4090s, but higher-tier GPUs now necessitate even stronger units.
For gamers, 3,000 watts is excessive—even a high-end setup with an RTX 5090 and multiple 4K monitors would not require such capacity. Experts recommend opting for a standard gaming PSU and allocating savings toward other upgrades.
ASUS has not yet announced pricing or availability for the Pro Workstation PSU.
