My Business That’s Always “In the Making” – Why Ideas Aren’t Enough

For over a decade, I’ve told myself (and anyone who’d listen) that my business is in the making. I own a domain. I have a long list of ideas. But here’s the hard truth: An idea isn’t a business—it’s an excuse.

My Business

So what’s the real hurdle? Execution.

My Business: The Dream vs. The Reality

My business plan is simple: e-commerce. “I can sell anything online!”—except, that’s not the real challenge. The real questions are:

  • How do I sell enough to be profitable?
  • How do I build a reputation for quality?
  • How do I stand out in a sea of competitors?

After years of brainstorming, I realized: Business cards are my thing.

Why Business Cards?

Think about it—nobody loves designing business cards, but everyone needs them. Thanks to Canva and a million online templates, designing one is easy. The real hassle? Getting them printed.

Who has the time to:

  1. Go to a local printer
  2. Place the order
  3. Wait a day or two
  4. Go back to collect them

Solution? Order online. Upload your design, pick your paper quality, and get doorstep delivery. Simple.

The Catch: Competition & Margins

The demand is there—but so is the competition. Most online card services rely on the same third-party printers, meaning:

  • Printing costs are fixed.
  • Market rates are nearly identical.
  • Profit margins are razor-thin.

So how do you win?

The Game Changer: Speed & Quality

Imagine this:

  • You place an order at 10 AM.
  • It arrives at your door by 5 PM.
  • The quality? Flawless.

Would you pay a little extra for that? Most people would.

The Lesson I Learned

Ideas are easy. Execution is hard. But if you find a real pain point—like the annoyance of slow, inconvenient printing—and solve it better than anyone else, you’ve got a business. Not just in the making. A real one.

So here’s my question to you:
What’s your “in the making” business? And what’s stopping you from making it real?

(Hint: It’s probably not the idea. It’s the doing.)
