AMSTERDAM: Arcadis, a global leader in sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions, has announced its acquisition of WSP Infrastructure Engineering GmbH, a Germany-based engineering firm specializing in rail infrastructure, signaling, structural engineering, and software development.
The acquisition, unveiled on March 20, is set to double Arcadis’ footprint in the German rail sector, an area poised for significant growth due to substantial infrastructure investment plans.
WSP Infrastructure Engineering GmbH, with its 160 employees, is recognized for its expertise in German rail design and critical framework agreements with Deutsche Bahn. These strengths are expected to complement Arcadis’ existing operations and unlock new revenue opportunities through streamlined project delivery and global collaboration.
Germany’s rail infrastructure market has emerged as a key priority for Arcadis. An €86 billion investment program targeting rail upgrades from 2020 to 2029, along with Deutsche Bahn’s identified need for up to €150 billion by 2034, underscores the sector’s potential. The recent announcement of a €500 billion infrastructure fund aimed at modernization and digitalization further reinforces this opportunity.
Arcadis CEO Alan Brookes highlighted the strategic importance of the acquisition. “This acquisition strengthens Arcadis’ position in the attractive German rail market. By integrating this expertise with our European rail network capabilities, we are accelerating our Mobility business and enhancing our ability to meet the rising demand for sustainable, future-ready transport solutions,” Brookes said.
The move aligns with Arcadis’ broader success in sectors like energy transition, industrial manufacturing, and data centers, positioning the company as a robust engineering and consultancy force in Germany.
