TotalEnergies and Air Liquide partner to develop green hydrogen projects in the Netherlands

hydrogen business

PARIS: TotalEnergies has signed agreements with Air Liquide to develop two green hydrogen projects in the Netherlands, aligning with its 2030 goal to decarbonize the hydrogen used in its European refineries.

The projects will produce and deliver approximately 45,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, using renewable power generated primarily by the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, a joint venture between TotalEnergies and RWE.

Joint Venture for Zeeland Electrolyzer

TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have formed a joint venture, each holding a 50% stake, to build and operate a 250 MW electrolyzer near the Zeeland refinery. This project will produce up to 30,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, reducing CO2 emissions at the site by up to 300,000 tons annually. The project represents a €600 million investment and seeks support from European and national subsidy programs. The electrolyzer is expected to be commissioned in 2029.

Green Hydrogen Supply to Antwerp

In addition to the Zeeland project, TotalEnergies has signed a tolling agreement with Air Liquide for 130 MW of the 200 MW ELYgator electrolyzer project in Maasvlakte, Netherlands. This agreement will produce 15,000 tons of green hydrogen per year for the TotalEnergies platform in Antwerp, reducing CO2 emissions at the site by up to 150,000 tons annually. The project is expected to be operational by the end of 2027.

Leadership in Decarbonization

Vincent Stoquart, President of Refining & Chemicals at TotalEnergies, emphasized the significance of these partnerships in achieving the company’s ambition to decarbonize hydrogen consumption in its European refineries by 2030. Emilie Mouren-Renouard, a member of the Air Liquide Executive Committee, highlighted the role of these projects in reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors and supporting Europe’s renewable energy targets.

Commitment to Clean Energy

TotalEnergies is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and has contracted over 170,000 tons of green hydrogen annually for its refineries in France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The company aims to reduce its annual CO2 emissions by around three million tons by 2030.

Expanding Clean Energy Access in Emerging Markets

TotalEnergies, Masdar, and EPointZero have signed a Framework for Action (FFA) agreement to drive clean energy access in emerging markets in Africa and Asia. The agreement, witnessed by high-level officials from the UAE and France, aims to provide reliable and sustainable electricity to local communities and support long-term energy transformation. The partnership will also explore clean energy opportunities in India.

Strengthening UAE-France Ties

The FFA agreement was signed at the UAE-France High Level Business Council meeting, reinforcing the strong strategic partnership between the two countries. The Council, launched in 2022, promotes economic exchanges and collaboration in key sectors such as climate action, energy, artificial intelligence, and advanced technology.
