LOS ANGELES: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced the appointment of Kurtis Lindqvist as its new President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Lindqvist, a seasoned industry leader with over three decades of experience, is set to take the helm of the global internet oversight body on December 5, 2024.
Tripti Sinha, the Chair of the ICANN Board of Directors, expressed her enthusiasm for Lindqvist’s appointment, citing his reputation as a transformational leader. “Kurtis is poised to drive ICANN into a new era, fostering stronger industry partnerships and reinforcing our pivotal role in the multistakeholder model of internet governance,” said Sinha.
Lindqvist’s extensive background includes his current role as CEO of the London Internet Exchange (LINX) since 2019, previous leadership at Netnod, and advisory positions with various governments on internet-related policies. His active participation in the internet community spans over two decades, contributing to the Internet Architecture Board and leading groups within RIPE and the Internet Engineering Task Force.
Sinha highlighted Lindqvist’s alignment with ICANN’s vision and strategic objectives. “His commitment to a unified, interoperable internet, coupled with his vast experience, makes him the ideal leader to collaborate with our staff, board, and community to achieve ICANN’s mission,” she added.
Kurtis Lindqvist shared his excitement about joining ICANN during a critical period for internet governance. “The internet’s open architecture and governance model have been catalysts for innovation and industry transformation. I am deeply invested in safeguarding and advancing this framework, which is central to ICANN’s success,” Lindqvist remarked.
Until Lindqvist assumes his new role, Sally Costerton will continue as Interim President and CEO. Sinha praised Costerton’s leadership and her role in maintaining strategic progress during the transition.
The selection of Lindqvist concludes a comprehensive search process initiated by a CEO Search Committee, which evaluated a diverse pool of 100 candidates from across the globe. The rigorous process involved community and stakeholder consultations, ultimately leading to Lindqvist’s unanimous selection by the board on June 8, 2024.
Kurtis Lindqvist will remain at LINX until a successor is appointed. Upon starting at ICANN, he will focus on a seamless leadership transition, working closely with the board and executive team. He will be based out of ICANN’s Geneva office, with significant time spent at the Los Angeles headquarters.
