The world of education is on the cusp of a transformative shift, with Pearson, the foremost authority in learning, uncovering a striking trend: a majority of UK secondary school students (69%) are advocating for a curriculum enriched with generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI). This surge in interest is a response to the escalating presence of AI in the workplace and society at large.
UK Secondary Students’ Call for AI Literacy
Pearson’s imminent annual School Report has brought to light that nearly three-quarters (74%) of the UK Secondary students surveyed recognize the necessity to comprehend Gen AI’s role in shaping the future. With 38% already utilizing tools like ChatGPT in their daily lives and 64% acknowledging its significance in their impending professional endeavors, the demand for AI education is undeniable.
Pearson’s Pioneering Initiative: EPQ:AI
To cater to this burgeoning need, Pearson has joined forces with educators to introduce the ‘EPQ:AI’—an Extended Project Qualification pathway in Gen AI literacy. This program is a trailblazer, offering A-level students a chance to explore the role and ethics of Gen AI, leading to a recognized qualification. As the exam season approaches, a wave of student projects centered on AI is anticipated.
EPQ:AI – A Deep Dive
Last year witnessed around 37,000 students undertaking an EPQ, each equating to half an A-level and up to 28 UCAS points. The Gen AI-centric EPQ encourages students to conduct in-depth investigations into the benefits and limitations of Gen AI, applying their findings to a spectrum of real-life scenarios.
The Skills Outlook Report: AI’s Impact on the Workforce
Pearson’s recent Skills Outlook report highlights that Gen AI could potentially automate over 40% of tasks within certain white-collar jobs in the UK. Despite this, there’s a discernible gap in AI readiness among UK secondary school students.
Perceptions of AI Education in the UK
A significant portion of students (48%) believe that AI education is more advanced in other countries compared to the UK. Alarmingly, 22% are uncertain about AI’s definition, and 43% feel unprepared to identify and navigate the risks associated with AI.
Pearson’s Commitment to AI Literacy
Sharon Hague, Managing Director of School Assessment & Qualifications at Pearson, asserts the importance of Gen AI literacy for empowering the youth. The EPQ:AI is a stepping stone in Pearson’s collaborative efforts with various stakeholders to prepare students for an AI-driven future.
