CoreWeave commits £1 billion to UK’s AI sector

CoreWeave, a leading provider of specialized cloud services for AI, has announced the establishment of its European headquarters in London. This move is part of the company’s wider strategy to expand across the European continent. The new office in London represents a substantial investment of £1 billion, aimed at enhancing the UK’s capabilities in AI.

This investment is expected to generate numerous job opportunities in various fields, including engineering, operations, finance, and marketing.

CoreWeave’s Co-founder and CEO, Mike Intrator, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, “The demand for AI infrastructure is soaring, and London’s status as a key AI hub makes it an ideal location for our growth. Our new facilities will provide high-performance computing solutions tailored for AI enterprises, facilitating the development and deployment of cutting-edge AI applications.”

The UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, welcomed CoreWeave’s decision, highlighting the company’s role in advancing AI innovation and reinforcing the UK’s stature as a technological powerhouse. “CoreWeave’s investment is a testament to the UK’s thriving AI sector and our commitment to becoming the prime location for pioneering companies,” said Sunak.

Echoing the Prime Minister’s sentiments, the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, Michelle Donelan, remarked on the positive implications of CoreWeave’s choice for the UK’s tech landscape. “The decision to locate CoreWeave’s European HQ in London is a clear endorsement of our approach to AI and innovation. The forthcoming data centres will be instrumental in shaping the AI breakthroughs of the future,” Donelan noted.

The planned opening of two UK data centres in 2024, with additional expansion anticipated in 2025, is set to provide a significant boost to the UK’s AI infrastructure. CoreWeave’s existing data centres are known for supporting some of the world’s largest high-performance GPU clusters, and the company’s cloud platform is renowned for its efficiency and performance in handling AI workloads.

This strategic investment by CoreWeave is expected to further the UK government’s efforts in promoting responsible AI and driving investment in the sector, with plans to upskill millions in AI technologies. The presence of CoreWeave in the UK is poised to support the growth of AI labs and enterprise customers, thereby contributing to the country’s ambition to solidify its position as a global leader in AI innovation.
