McAfee and Intel showcase AI-powered deepfake detection technology

Posted on May 6, 2024May 6, 2024

McAfee has announced at the RSA Conference in San Francisco the enhancement of its AI-powered deepfake detection capabilities. The technology, which is integrated into the McAfee® Deepfake Detector, now leverages the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) in Intel® Core™ Ultra processor-based PCs to provide more robust protection against deepfake scams and misinformation.

The Deepfake Detector, initially introduced as ‘Project Mockingbird,’ has been a focal point of attention as concerns over deepfake-related fraud have escalated. A recent survey indicated that 64% of people worldwide are more worried about deepfakes today than they were just a year ago. McAfee’s collaboration with Intel aims to address this growing unease by enabling users to distinguish real content from AI-manipulated fabrications.

McAfee’s Deepfake Detector employs sophisticated AI detection methods, including transformer-based Deep Neural Network models, to alert users when a video’s audio appears to be artificially generated or altered. The RSA demonstration highlighted the substantial gains in performance and privacy when utilizing Intel’s AI PC technology.

By harnessing the power of Intel Core Ultra processor’s NPU, McAfee’s AI models can perform deepfake analysis locally on the device, eliminating the need to transmit sensitive data to the cloud. This approach has led to a remarkable 300% increase in performance, according to McAfee’s benchmarks. The local processing not only enhances privacy but also contributes to better battery life, offering a comprehensive set of advantages to consumers.

Steve Grobman, McAfee’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the significance of the Intel partnership, stating, “In an era where visual evidence is no longer inherently trustworthy, and AI-generated deepfakes blur the lines between reality and fiction, it is imperative for consumers to have access to cutting-edge AI tools. Our collaboration with Intel propels us forward in providing a seamless and potent user experience, where the most sophisticated generative AI deepfake detection is achieved without sacrificing performance or privacy.”

Carla Rodríguez, Vice President and General Manager of Ecosystem Partner Enabling at Intel, echoed this sentiment, expressing excitement over the joint effort to combat deceptive deepfakes while ensuring optimal performance and user privacy.

The McAfee Deepfake Detector is poised to become available for English language content, with plans to extend support to additional languages in future updates. This development marks a crucial step in empowering users to navigate their digital environments with greater confidence and discernment.
