AIP Capital (AIP), a global asset management and investment company, announced today the formation of Phoenix Aviation Capital, a full-service aircraft lessor focusing on financing modern, high-demand aircraft worldwide.
Phoenix is wholly owned by an American insurance and financial services company that has approximately $11 billion in assets under management. As part of this transaction, Phoenix’s owner also acquired a 49% stake in AIP, with AIP’s management team still holding a majority of 51%. No other shareholders are involved in AIP.
Phoenix will be exclusively managed by AIP Capital and will benefit from the company’s extensive experience in aviation and leadership, including through Mathew Adamo, Managing Partner at AIP, who will sit on the board of Phoenix and be directly involved in the direction, execution, and oversight of its growth strategy.
AIP currently consists of 20 professionals based in Dublin, Ireland, and Stamford, Connecticut; it plans to employ 25 professionals by mid-2024, further supporting Phoenix’s marketing and operational requirements.
“We are thrilled to announce the creation of Phoenix Aviation Capital, a project our team has been working on for several months,” commented Mathew Adamo, Managing Partner at AIP.
“The creation of Phoenix represents a key step in implementing our strategy to meet the fleet and financing needs of our global airline clients throughout market cycles.”
Phoenix’s initial portfolio will consist of next-generation aircraft leased long-term to a diversified clientele of airlines. Phoenix holds a definitive agreement to acquire the rights, interests, and obligations of a portfolio of 30 737-8 aircraft from 777 Partners. The terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. Phoenix will also ensure additional long-term growth through sale-leaseback transactions with international airlines and the acquisition of other aircraft leasing companies.
