Amazon and Avangrid partner to repower Oregon wind farm

Amazon and Avangrid, Inc. (NYSE: AGR), a leading sustainable energy company, have announced a new power purchase agreement (PPA) to source renewable energy from a wind farm in Gilliam County, Oregon. The project, called Amazon Wind Farm Oregon – Leaning Juniper IIA, will have a capacity of 98.4 MW and will consist of 40 turbines.

The wind farm is a repowering project that will extend the life and efficiency of the existing facility, which has been operating since 2008. The project will produce enough energy to power 22,800 homes every year and will support about 200 jobs during construction. Avangrid has also executed contracts to recycle all turbine blades that will be decommissioned, diverting more than 1,000 tons of mass from landfill.

The PPA is part of both companies’ commitment to accelerating the global transition to renewable energy. Amazon is the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy and aims to use 100% renewable energy for its operations by 2025. Avangrid owns and operates a portfolio of renewable energy generation facilities across the United States and aspires to be the leading sustainable energy company in the country.

The wind farm will also benefit the local community through the Avangrid Community Sponsorship Program, which has contributed to local libraries, pre-schools, and firefighters. The project has also paid more than $11 million in local property taxes to date, supporting public services like education and safety. These contributions will continue after repowering.

Pedro Azagra, Avangrid CEO, said: “We are proud to have signed this agreement with Amazon, a company that shares our commitment to renewable energy. With projects like this, we are not only supporting Amazon’s climate goals, but creating jobs and contributing to local communities.”

Abhishek Sharma, Head of Energy Strategy for Amazon Web Services (AWS), said: “Amazon is excited to announce our first utility-scale renewable energy project in Oregon. The project adds to the 2 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity Amazon has already enabled across the western U.S. grid. This will help Amazon remain on a path to utilizing 100% renewable energy for the electricity powering its operations by 2025.”
