Google unveils Gemini, a powerful AI chatbot that can outsmart humans

Google has announced a major overhaul of its generative AI service, formerly known as Google Bard, and renamed it as Gemini. The new name reflects the dual nature of the service, which can act as both a chatbot and a content creator.

Gemini is powered by the Gemini Ultra 1.0 model, which Google claims is the first AI model to surpass human experts in MMLU (massive multitask language understanding), a comprehensive test of knowledge and problem-solving abilities across 57 subjects, ranging from math and physics to history and ethics.

According to Google, Gemini can handle “highly complex tasks like coding, logical reasoning, following nuanced instructions and collaborating on creative projects”. The service is available as part of a paid subscription plan, called Google One AI Premium, which also includes access to other advanced AI features across Google apps.

Google says that Gemini can also function as a “personal tutor” for users, by remembering previous conversations and providing feedback and guidance. Users can also leverage Gemini’s content creation abilities to generate fresh and relevant content, analyze recent trends and brainstorm improved ways to grow their audiences.

One of the most notable features of Gemini is its ability to interact with coders, who can use the service to explore different coding approaches, get suggestions and feedback, and even collaborate with Gemini on coding projects.

Google has also launched a new Gemini mobile app for both Android and iOS devices, which allows users to access Gemini’s chatbot and content creation features on the go. Users can ask Gemini questions, generate captions for photos, and get personalized recommendations based on their interests and preferences.

Android users can also integrate Gemini with the existing Google Assistant, which can be activated by pressing the power button or saying ‘Hey Google’. iOS users can access Gemini through the Google app.

Gemini is currently available in the US on Android and iOS devices, and will be rolled out globally in the coming weeks, Google said. The company hopes that Gemini will become a “trusted and helpful companion” for users, and a “game-changer” for the AI industry.
