Apple may surprise us with a USB-C update for the iPhone 14

The iPhone 15 series is expected to launch next month in September, and it may bring a major change to the charging port of the Apple devices. According to rumours, the iPhone 15 may ditch the Lightning port and adopt the USB-C standard, which is more widely used and compatible.

However, a new report suggests that Apple may not wait for the iPhone 15 to make this switch, and may instead update the existing iPhone 14 models with USB-C ports, reports Stuff.tv.

The report comes from Aaron, a developer and Apple writer, who discovered references to two new iPhone models in the tvOS 17 Beta 5 code. However, these models have numeric names that indicate they are powered by the A15 Bionic chip, which is the same chip used in the iPhone 14.

This implies that these are not part of the iPhone 15 series, which is likely to use the A16 Bionic chip for the lower end models and the A17 chip for the premium models.

Why would Apple update the iPhone 14 with USB-C ports? The reason could be related to the EU’s regulation that requires all devices sold from 2024 onwards to have a USB-C port for charging. Apple usually keeps the previous year’s iPhone as a cheaper option alongside the new series, so updating the iPhone 14 with USB-C ports would make it compliant with the EU’s rules, while keeping it in the iPhone line-up.

This would be an unusual move from Apple, but it is not impossible. We don’t expect any other changes to the iPhone 14, except for the new port. It would be similar to the colour refreshes that Apple sometimes does. We will have to wait until September to see if this report is true, and what else Apple has in store for us with the new iPhones.
