SaskTel, the provincial telecommunications provider, has announced the debut of its 5G network in the cities of Warman and Martensville in Saskatchewan.
The 5G network, which offers data speeds of up to 1.2 Gbps download, is available in parts of Warman and Martensville starting today. SaskTel aims to provide 5G coverage to most parts of these communities by March 2024.
The launch of the 5G network is part of SaskTel’s commitment to invest $1.6 billion across the province over the next five years, to upgrade its wireless and fibre networks.
The 5G network will enable faster speeds, expanded network capacity, and minimal latency, which will improve the wireless experience for customers and support the development of innovative technologies, such as smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and virtual reality.
SaskTel’s president and CEO, Doug Burnett, said that the company is proud to bring 5G technology to Warman and Martensville, which are two of the fastest-growing cities in Saskatchewan. He said that SaskTel’s 5G network will help these communities thrive and attract more businesses and residents.
The launch of SaskTel’s 5G network was welcomed by local officials and representatives. Terry Jenson, MLA for Martensville-Warman, said that the 5G network will support growth across Saskatchewan and ensure that the province remains one of the most well-connected in the country. Gary Philipchuk, mayor of Warman, said that modern technology and “hyper-fast” connectivity are essential for a vibrant, growing community like Warman.
To access the 5G network, customers will need a compatible 5G device and a 5G SaskTel plan. SaskTel offers a range of 5G devices from brands such as Samsung, Apple, LG, Motorola, and Google. SaskTel also offers unlimited data plans with no overage fees or speed reductions.
