Google cuts jobs at Waze as it shifts to Google Ads technology

Google, the internet giant owned by Alphabet (GOOGL.O), has announced that it is laying off some workers at its mapping app Waze, as it integrates the app’s advertising system with Google Ads technology.

The company did not disclose the number of job cuts, but said that it will affect those roles focused on Waze Ads monetization. The move is part of Google’s plan to create a better and more seamless experience for Waze advertisers, who will be able to use Google Ads technology to reach Waze users.

Google acquired Waze, an Israeli-based app that provides real-time traffic and navigation information, for about $1.3 billion in 2013. In December, Google said that it will merge Waze and Google Maps teams to consolidate processes and make them part of the Google Geo division, which includes Google Maps, Google Earth, and Street View.

The news was first reported by CNBC, which cited an email from Chris Phillips, the head of the Geo division. He said that Google will notify advertisers and partners about the change on Wednesday.
