Land Rover Classic launches heritage-themed Defender Works V8 Islay Edition

LONDON, UK: Land Rover Classic has announced a new special edition of its Defender Works V8, inspired by the history and nature of the Isle of Islay in Scotland. The Classic Defender Works V8 Islay Edition pays tribute to Spencer Wilks, one of the founders of Land Rover, and the island where he tested early prototypes and coined the name “Land Rover”.

The Islay Edition is based on the same technical specification as the Defender Works V8, which was launched in 2018 to mark the 70th anniversary of Land Rover. It features a 405hp 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine, an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, and a range of upgrades and enhancements to improve performance and comfort.

The special edition also draws inspiration from a Series IIa Land Rover that belonged to Spencer Wilks and is now part of the Land Rover Classic collection. The vehicle has a distinctive blue and cream colour scheme, which is replicated on the Islay Edition, along with other details such as a heritage grille, silver roof rack, cream steel wheels and a bespoke interior.

The Islay Edition also incorporates elements from the island’s natural beauty and whisky heritage, such as a tartan fabric trim, an engraved map of Islay on the dashboard, and a copper plaque with the coordinates of Laggan Estate, where Wilks used to test his vehicles.

The Classic Defender Works V8 Islay Edition will be limited to 30 units, with 17 in 90 short wheelbase and 13 in 110 long wheelbase versions. The prices start from £195,000 for the 90 and £205,000 for the 110.

The special edition is part of Land Rover Classic’s celebration of 75 years of Land Rover in 2023. Dan Pink, Director of Land Rover Classic, said: “In 2023, we celebrate 75 years of Land Rover. Spencer Wilks and the Isle of Islay are an important part of our history, and the Classic Defender Works V8 Islay Edition is a fitting way to help us celebrate a landmark anniversary. It references a special vehicle in our collection, Spencer Wilks’ beautiful Series IIa, and is influenced by the special products and incredible nature of Islay itself. The authenticity, craftsmanship and attention to detail make this a truly collectible classic Defender.”
