G7 nations form alliance to create shared nuclear fuel supply chains

Posted on April 17, 2023April 17, 2023

Five countries including the UK, US, Canada, Japan and France have announced plans to create shared nuclear fuel supply chains at the G7 talks in Sapporo, Japan.

The move is aimed at reducing Russia’s stronghold on the global nuclear energy market and cutting off a means for President Vladimir Putin to fund the invasion of Ukraine. The agreement will help strengthen the UK’s nuclear energy sector and provide a reliable source of nuclear fuel from safe and secure sources.

The fuel is used to operate nuclear power stations which provide around 15% of the UK’s electricity supply, with a goal of reaching 25% by 2050.
