Google made its long-awaited entry into the smartwatch market last year with the Pixel Watch, a device that runs on Wear OS and features a circular display, a rotating crown and a sleek design. The Pixel Watch received positive reviews for its performance, software and fitness features, but also faced some criticism for its battery life and outdated hardware.
Google Leak Reveals Surprising Pixel Watch 2 Design
Now, 9to5Google has learned from a source that Google is working on a successor to the Pixel Watch, which is currently slated to launch with the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones later this year. The Pixel Watch 2 — which may not be the final name — is expected to bring some significant improvements over the first generation, especially in terms of hardware and battery life.
According to 9to5Google, the Pixel Watch 2 will use a newer and more efficient chip than the Samsung Exynos 9110 that powers the original Pixel Watch. The Exynos 9110 is a 10nm chip that was first used in the 2018 Galaxy Watch, and it lags behind the latest processors from Samsung and Qualcomm for smartwatches. The Exynos W920 is a 5nm chip that is used in the Galaxy Watch 4 and 5, while the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 is a 4nm chip that will likely power the next wave of Wear OS devices.
A new chip should provide better performance and battery life for the Pixel Watch 2, which are two areas where the Pixel Watch could use some improvement. The Pixel Watch has a battery that lasts for a full day for most users, but not much more. A new chip could extend the battery life or allow for more features without compromising it. The performance of the Pixel Watch is generally good, but a new chip could make it smoother and faster.
On the software front, we expect the Pixel Watch 2 to run on Android 13 and feature Material You design language, which was introduced with Android 12. Material You allows users to customize their devices with dynamic colors based on their wallpapers and preferences. We also expect Google to add more fitness and health features to the Pixel Watch 2, as it did with the first generation.
The Pixel Watch was first teased at Google I/O 2022 after a prototype was accidentally left at a restaurant and leaked online. The official version looked much better than the leaked images and impressed many with its design and features. The Pixel Watch 2 could be another step forward for Google in the smartwatch market, which is dominated by Apple and Samsung.
Google has not confirmed or denied the existence of the Pixel Watch 2, but we expect to hear more about it in the coming months. Google usually announces and releases its flagship phones in October, so we could see the Pixel Watch 2 alongside the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro later this year.
