Apple fans, get ready for a major upgrade. The tech giant is reportedly working on a new generation of iPad Pro devices that will feature OLED displays, larger screens, and faster processors. These could be some of the most significant changes to the iPad Pro line since its debut in 2015.
OLED Displays for Better Visuals
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has a reliable track record of breaking Apple news, the new iPad Pro devices are expected to launch in the spring or summer of 2024. One of the main attractions will be the OLED displays, which offer several advantages over the current LCD and mini-LED displays.
OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode, which means that each pixel can emit its own light and turn off completely when not needed. This results in deeper blacks, more vibrant colors, higher contrast, and lower power consumption. OLED displays are also thinner and more flexible than LCD and mini-LED displays, which could allow for sleeker designs and curved edges.
The current 11-inch iPad Pro has an LCD display, while the larger 12.9-inch model has a mini-LED display, which is a type of LCD that uses smaller and more numerous backlighting zones to improve contrast and brightness. However, OLED displays are still superior in terms of color accuracy, response time, and viewing angles.
Larger Screens for More Productivity
Gurman also reports that the new iPad Pro devices will have slightly larger screens than the current models. The smaller iPad Pro will grow from 11 inches to 11.5 inches, while the larger one will increase from 12.9 inches to 13 inches.
These may not seem like huge differences, but they could make a noticeable impact on the user experience, especially for tasks that require more screen real estate, such as multitasking, editing, and gaming.
Interestingly, Gurman does not mention anything about the rumored 14-inch or 16-inch iPad Pro that some analysts have speculated about in the past. It seems that Apple is sticking to its current size range for the iPad Pro line, at least for now.
Faster Processors and Improved Accessories
The new iPad Pro devices will also come with Apple’s latest M3 chip, which is expected to be a significant upgrade over the current M1 chip that powers the iPad Pro, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac. The M3 chip will likely offer faster performance, better graphics, and longer battery life.
Additionally, the new iPad Pro devices will be compatible with an optional Magic Keyboard accessory that will have a larger trackpad and other enhancements. The Magic Keyboard is a detachable keyboard and trackpad combo that connects to the iPad Pro via magnets and allows for adjustable viewing angles and backlit keys. The current Magic Keyboard costs $299 for the 11-inch model and $349 for the 12.9-inch model.
A Much-Needed Refresh
The iPad Pro line is overdue for a major refresh. The last update was in 2022, but it only brought minor changes, such as the M1 chip, 5G connectivity, and Thunderbolt support. The design and display remained largely unchanged since 2018.
The new iPad Pro devices could be a game-changer for Apple and its customers. They could offer a more immersive and productive experience than ever before, as well as compete with other high-end tablets and laptops on the market.
However, it is still unclear when exactly the new iPad Pro devices will be available. Gurman says that they will not be part of Apple’s September event, where the company is expected to unveil new iPhones and Apple Watches. Instead, they will likely be announced in a separate event later this year or early next year.
We will keep you posted on any further developments regarding the new iPad Pro devices. Stay tuned!
