SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: Coronado Global Resources announced Douglas Thompson will become Chief Executive Officer in accordance with Coronado’s planned succession process.
Gerry Spindler will retire from his role as Chief Executive Officer after the Company’s Annual General Meeting to be held on or about 25 May 2023. He will be appointed to the position of Executive Chair of the Board.
Douglas Thompson has been the Company’s Chief Operating Officer, Australia, since September 2021 and has more than 25 years’ experience in the mining industry, including as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Thiess, an affiliate of the CIMIC Group.
Mr Thompson will establish an office in the US and will work between the US and Australia. Group Chief Financial Officer Gerhard Ziems will assume an expanded role post the Annual General Meeting, taking responsibility for all sales and marketing as well as strategic investment activity. Mr Ziems intends to split his time between the US and Australia.
William Koeck will remain on Coronado’s board of directors as Deputy Chair and Lead Independent Director.
Mr Koeck said: “On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Mr Spindler for his leadership, outstanding contributions and dedication during his 11 years as Coronado’s Chief Executive. We are grateful that he has agreed to stay on as Executive Chair and assist the Board, given his extensive experience and understanding of our growth strategy.
We are also fortunate to have an executive of Douglas Thompson’s calibre to replace Mr Spindler.
The Board was unanimous in the decision on Douglas Thompson’s appointment to lead Coronado at a time when we have great momentum and significant growth opportunities. Mr Thompson has done an outstanding job leading the Company’s operations in Australia and is a strong fit for our strategy and culture.”
Mr Spindler said: “It has been my great honour and privilege to serve as the Chief Executive of Coronado for more than 11 years. I am proud of the Company that we have built and its leadership position in the resources sector. I would like to thank the Board and the entire team at Coronado for the work that they have done during my tenure. I feel that now is the right time to step back from the role of Chief Executive and look forward to continuing to contribute to the Company as Executive Chair.”
