PARIS: TotalEnergies and French artificial intelligence firm Mistral AI announced a collaboration Tuesday to accelerate AI-driven innovation in support of the energy company’s multi-energy strategy, with a focus on low-carbon solutions.
The partnership will establish a joint AI innovation lab staffed by teams from both companies. Mistral AI will provide its advanced AI technologies, while TotalEnergies will contribute its expertise in energy production, particularly in renewable and low-carbon energy. The lab will test and develop digital solutions aimed at improving efficiency, reducing emissions and enhancing customer experience.
Key Initiatives of the Collaboration
The first projects under the partnership will include:
- A research assistant for TotalEnergies’ 1,000 scientists, helping them develop new energy solutions and reduce the company’s environmental footprint.
- AI-powered decision-support tools to optimize industrial operations, improve asset performance and lower CO₂ emissions.
- Customer-focused solutions to enhance energy-saving options and user experience.
The lab will also explore AI applications in renewable energy production. Additionally, given Europe’s emphasis on digital sovereignty, the companies will assess opportunities for TotalEnergies to adopt AI infrastructure within the region.
TotalEnergies’ AI-Driven Strategy
TotalEnergies has increasingly integrated AI into its operations, previously using it for earth sciences, predictive maintenance and equipment monitoring. The company now sees AI as critical to expanding renewable energy production, cutting emissions and developing new customer services.
The TotalEnergies Digital Factory, marking its fifth anniversary this year, employs 300 digital experts and has developed over 100 solutions—60 of which utilize machine learning and generative AI.
Leadership Perspectives
Patrick Pouyanné, chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, said the partnership aligns with the company’s commitment to innovation and Europe’s technological growth.
“We are delighted to work with Mistral AI, a leading French player in artificial intelligence,” Pouyanné said. “AI has huge potential to transform energy systems, and this partnership reflects our pioneering spirit.”
Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI, emphasized the broader impact of the collaboration.
“This partnership illustrates the positive impact generative AI can have on a sector as strategic as energy,” Mensch said. “By dedicating our AI solutions and experts to this effort, we are helping drive operational improvements and the digital transition of a global energy leader.”
The initiative underscores TotalEnergies’ push to leverage cutting-edge technology in its transition toward sustainable energy solutions.
