COPENHAGEN: WeRide, a Chinese autonomous driving technology company, and GreenMobility, Denmark’s leading shared electric mobility provider, announced Monday a strategic partnership to launch autonomous shared mobility services in Denmark, pending regulatory approval.
The deal marks WeRide’s first move into the Nordic region and its sixth market in Europe, following recent launches in Spain and Slovakia, a statement said.
Under the agreement, the companies plan to begin public service in the first half of 2027. Riders will be able to hail trips in the GXR, WeRide’s newest self-driving vehicle built to meet European Union standards, according to the companies.
The partnership pairs WeRide’s autonomous driving technology, which the company says has been validated globally, with GreenMobility’s fleet operations experience in Denmark. Officials from both companies said the deal reflects an “asset-light” strategy in which WeRide expands internationally by teaming up with established local mobility operators rather than building out its own infrastructure from scratch.
Company officials pointed to Denmark’s digital infrastructure, high rate of electric vehicle adoption and regulatory environment as reasons for entering the market.
The project will move forward with involvement from Danish public agencies, including the Danish Road Directorate and the Danish Road Traffic Authority, and will comply with Danish and EU regulations, the companies said.
“This partnership marks WeRide’s first entry into the Nordic region and another important milestone in our European expansion,” said Tony Han, founder and CEO of WeRide, in a statement. He said the goal is to build “a scalable model for deploying autonomous mobility in new international markets.”
Kasper Gjedsted, group CEO of GreenMobility, said the company’s experience running shared vehicle operations in Denmark positions it to move into autonomous services. “We are proud to team up with a world-class partner like WeRide,” he said.
WeRide currently operates in more than 40 cities across 12 countries and holds autonomous driving permits in eight countries, with a global fleet of more than 3,000 Level 4 vehicles, the company said. GreenMobility runs what it describes as the largest free-floating car-sharing network in the Nordic region, with more than 1,500 electric vehicles in Copenhagen and Aarhus.
The companies said further details on the Denmark launch will be released in the coming months.
WeRide trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker WRD and on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under 0800. GreenMobility trades on Nasdaq Copenhagen under GREENM.
