HAYWARD – Blue Current, Inc., a developer of silicon solid-state batteries, has secured more than $80 million in an extension of its Series D funding round, the company announced on Tuesday.
The investment round was anchored by Amazon.com, Inc., with participation from existing investors Koch Disruptive Technologies, Piedmont Capital, Rusheen Capital Partners, and Allen & Company.
The capital infusion is aimed at accelerating the commercialization of Blue Current’s battery platform, which is designed for electric mobility and stationary energy storage applications. In connection with the investment, James Hamilton, an Amazon Senior Vice President and Distinguished Engineer, will join Blue Current’s Board of Directors.
Solid-state batteries are seen as a next-generation technology, promising greater energy density, faster charging, and improved safety over conventional lithium-ion batteries by replacing flammable liquid electrolytes with solid materials. Blue Current’s approach uses a silicon composite anode paired with a proprietary dry electrolyte.
“To meet the urgent energy demands of today’s technology-driven world we need a de-risked approach to solid-state battery commercialization that unlocks domestic manufacturing capacity,” said Susan Stone, CEO of Blue Current.
The company emphasizes that its design prioritizes safety and can be manufactured using scaled, existing lithium-ion production equipment, aiming to ease the path to market. Its pilot production facility is located in Hayward, California.
“Scaling new battery solutions requires more than lab breakthroughs,” said Amazon’s James Hamilton. “Blue Current’s approach could make solid-state batteries more affordable and accelerate their adoption to meet the growing demand for stationary storage and longer-range electric vehicles with faster charging times.”
The global push for electrification has spurred significant investment in advanced battery technologies. Blue Current’s latest funding round underscores the industry’s search for safer, higher-performance energy storage solutions that can be produced at scale.
