Meta is set to launch its long-awaited Twitter rival, Threads, on July 6th, according to a listing for the app in the iOS App Store. Threads is described as “Instagram’s text-based conversation app” that will allow users to keep their Instagram handle and follow the same accounts they follow on the photo-sharing platform.
Threads will also let users choose the privacy of their posts and interact with other people’s posts by hearting, sending and sharing them. The app could appeal to Twitter users who are unhappy with the recent changes to the website that limit how many tweets an unverified account can read per day.
Twitter announced in May that it was capping the number of tweets an unverified account can read per day at 600, while verified accounts can read up to 6,000. The company said the move was to “address extreme levels of data scraping [and] system manipulation.” However, many users have complained that they have been locked out of their feeds as a result of the cap.
Meta has been working on a Twitter competitor for a while and reportedly planned to make it a decentralized service that’s compatible with Mastodon, an open-source social network. However, it’s unclear if that’s still the case when Threads launches. The app will be available for iOS devices on July 6th and is expected to roll out to Android devices soon after.
