Dearborn, Michigan: Ford Motor Co has announced an expansion of its recall, affecting approximately 125,000 sport utility vehicles and trucks, due to potential engine failures that could lead to a fire hazard.
The recall encompasses certain models of the Escape and Lincoln Corsair SUVs, as well as the Maverick compact pickup trucks from the 2020-2023 model years, equipped with 2.5L hybrid or plug-in hybrid engines.
The decision to expand the recall was made after identifying manufacturing issues that could cause premature engine failure, posing a risk of fire and potential injury, as stated in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In July 2022, Ford initially recalled 100,000 vehicles in the United States, including the Escape, Corsair, and Maverick models, following reports of fires or smoke incidents associated with suspected block or oil pan breaches. The company had identified 23 such incidents globally, prompting the initial recall. Unfortunately, Ford has received reports of at least three additional vehicle fires after the implementation of the 2022 recall fix.
In response to the expanded recall, Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are advising affected vehicle owners to park and turn off the engine immediately if they notice unexpected engine noises, experience a reduction in vehicle power, or observe smoke. These precautions are essential to minimize the risk of fire and potential harm.
Ford has acknowledged that the development of an effective fix for the newly expanded recall is currently underway. The company is actively working to address the issue and ensure the safety of its customers. Additional information and instructions for owners will be provided as the recall remedy progresses.
Owners of the affected Escape and Corsair SUVs, as well as the Maverick pickup trucks, are urged to stay informed and take the necessary precautions as advised by Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Regular updates regarding the recall fix will be communicated to ensure the timely resolution of the issue and the prevention of potential fire-related incidents.
