Amreli Steels Limited caught mis-declaring imported goods to evade duty and taxes

KARACHI: Pakistan Customs has detected gross mis-declaration of imported goods by Amreli Steels Limited, which would have caused a significant revenue loss if went undetected, Customnews.pk reported.

Amreli Steels Limited was incorporated in 1984 as a private limited company and converted into a public unquoted company in 2009. The Company is mainly engaged in manufacture and sale of steel bars and billets.

Information was received through Collector MCC Port Qasim Mumtaz Khoso regarding mis-declaration of imported goods cleared through the green channel. Subsequently, on the instructions of Additional Collector Fawad Hasan, Deputy Collector CIU Amjad Aman Leghari pursued the information.

According to Customnews.pk, consignment of 47 containers of importer M/S Amreli Steels assigned to get out through green channel was intercepted and when nine (09) containers were examined, auto parts scrap weighing more than 70 tons was found against the declared quantity of 900 Kg steel sheets.

In view of this mis-declaration, the remaining 38 containers are also marked for examination.

An official said on the directives of Chairman FBR Syed Shabbar Zaidi, Customs was keeping strict vigilance on mis-declaration and under-invoicing. Green channel facility had been widely misused causing huge revenue loss to the national exchequer.

However, Syed Shabbar Zaidi has focused on all loopholes and all means of mis-declaration, under-invoicing and smuggling are being eliminated.
