Penn Medicine, IBA form joint venture to guide proton therapy programs

LOUVAIN-LA-NEUVE: Penn Medicine and IBA announced Monday the creation of Noventra Oncology Alliance, a joint venture aimed at helping health care providers develop, implement and operate proton therapy and advanced radiation oncology programs.

The new company will offer integrated services including strategic and financial planning, clinical readiness, program implementation and long-term operational support, according to the announcement.

The venture combines Penn Medicine’s clinical, operational, research and education expertise with IBA’s proton therapy technology and project development capabilities. It is intended to help health care organizations manage the complexities of building and sustaining proton therapy programs.

Proton therapy has become an increasingly important part of comprehensive cancer care, and health systems worldwide are seeking to expand access while maintaining clinical excellence and financial sustainability, the companies said. But developing and operating a successful program requires more than buying equipment. Organizations must address strategic planning, capital investment, reimbursement, workforce development, clinical readiness, operational performance, research infrastructure and long-term growth.

“By combining Penn Medicine’s decades of experience building and operating one of the world’s leading proton therapy programs with IBA’s expertise in proton therapy technology and implementation, we are creating a unique platform to help healthcare organizations deliver exceptional care to patients while building sustainable, high-performing oncology programs,” said Dr. James Metz, chair of radiation oncology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

Henri de Romrée, deputy CEO of IBA, said a center that cannot treat patients at scale or operate sustainably ultimately falls short of its purpose. He said the venture helps organizations reduce the clinical, operational and financial risks of developing advanced radiation oncology programs.

“It will also be key to reinforcing the value of this technology in cancer treatment and accelerating its broader adoption,” de Romrée said.

Unlike traditional advisory models, the joint venture combines the perspectives of a leading clinical operator and a global proton therapy technology company, offering a single partner from initial strategy through long-term operations, the companies said.

More information about Noventra’s services is available at the company’s website or at IBA’s booth (#843) and Penn Medicine’s booth (#1722) during the ASTRO Annual Meeting 2026 in Boston.
