AI personal coaching startup Tomo raises $5M seed round

SAN FRANCISCO:  Tomo, an artificial intelligence-powered personal coaching service that operates through text messaging, announced Thursday it has raised $5 million in seed funding led by Bain Capital Ventures, with participation from Accel, Align Fund, Basis Set, Conviction and Pear VC.
The San Francisco-based company says it has attracted more than 10,000 paying customers through word of mouth alone while operating in stealth mode. Users engage with the service an average of 20 days per month, texting a dedicated phone number to track habits, manage budgets and work toward personal goals.
Tomo retains conversation history to build a profile of each user’s goals and motivations, then delivers reminders and coaching tailored to the individual. Users have shared food photos for calorie tracking, bank statement screenshots for budgeting and screen time reports for accountability, according to the company.
Co-founders Justin Quan, chief executive officer, and Raymond Chen, chief technology officer, previously built agentic app platforms and developed consumer applications. The founding team includes alumni from legal AI company Harvey and digital media company MrBeast.
Alongside the funding announcement, Tomo launched a companion app for its most active users. The app generates personalized interfaces that adapt over time — a fitness-focused user might see a workout tracker that evolves as they train for a marathon, while someone saving for a car could receive a customized budgeting display.
“We started Tomo because the best way to live a more meaningful life is to take a bet on yourself and focus on what matters,” Quan said.
Ryan Kim, a partner at Bain Capital Ventures, said the founders “understand what it takes to win user trust at scale” and have built a consumer product where engagement and user benefit reinforce each other.
Tomo said the new capital will fund team growth and expansion of the companion app.
