LONDON: British technology firm Hydrogen Utopia International PLC (HUI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Saudi Arabia’s Hydrogen Systems LLC to develop facilities that convert non-recyclable waste into hydrogen in the Kingdom, the companies said on Tuesday.
Under the non-binding agreement, Hydrogen Systems, a regional developer and operator of hydrogen infrastructure, will provide Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) and Operations and Maintenance (O&M) services for HUI’s planned Saudi projects.
The partnership aims to deploy HUI’s licensed technology, from U.S.-based InEnTec Inc., which converts challenging waste streams like mixed plastics, tyres, and hazardous materials into hydrogen and other carbon-free fuels. HUI holds an exclusive license for the technology in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
“This collaboration marks a significant step toward advancing sustainable hydrogen solutions in Saudi Arabia,” said Sattam Alsuwailem, CEO of Hydrogen Systems.
The move supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals for economic diversification and energy transition. It is also expected to bolster HUI’s ongoing engagement with the state-owned Saudi Investment Recycling Company (SIRC).
“Their strong boots-on-the-ground presence in Saudi Arabia and proven ability to deliver and operate hydrogen infrastructure give us real confidence,” said Aleksandra Binkowska, CEO of HUI.
Hydrogen Systems has experience in developing hydrogen refuelling infrastructure in the region, including projects with Shell Hydrogen. The companies stated the MoU establishes a framework intended to progress to definitive agreements as individual projects advance.
